Dissidia 012 Duodecim made me realise how officially cool Lightning was. Square allowed Lightning to lead yet another group of characters, some of whom were more popular and well-established than she was. And Lightning pulled it off!
When I heard this dialogue, I had to chuckle. DOES THIS GIRL KNOW NO FEAR?? Then I saw some pretty, pretty scenes, and this random idea popped up. I would’ve saved myself the trouble and used the awesome screenshot, but it was too blurry, so I redrew it. I figured out the painting technique this time! Am so happy. Again, Ididn’tavoiddrawingLightning’soutfit, itjustturnedoutthatway.

The basic idea is quite simple, though it takes some practice to get the hang of. I used Illust Studio, but any good painting program that has the Overlay Layer Mode feature can do too, eg. Easy Paint Tool SAI, Art Rage, Painter, Photoshop (if you have custom brushes that can produce the watercoloury, painterly look).
Basic idea:
1) Draw the gist of what you want in b&w with greyscale shading.
2) Create a new layer above and/or beneath it to apply colour. When creating a layer above, you can set that layer to Overlay, Dodge, Multiply etc, but mostly Overlay.
3) Repeat, to gradually build up the colours and details.
What can make a picture really stand out is to have good lighting.

Keep trying, and one day you’ll be as good if not better! I started from drawing manga-style in b&w. When I tried to colour, I’d end up using mainly blue, red and yellow, and my art teacher told me off x’D But I kept practising, learning from others, and little by little, I got better. You can too!
